Dr. Tayyab Rashid

Dr. Tayyab Rashid is a senior lecturer at the Centre for Wellbeing Science, University of Melbourne. Dr. Rashid is also a faculty associate with the Human Flourishing Program, Harvard University, and VIA Institute on Character. For more than 15 years, Dr. Rashid has worked with individuals experiencing complex mental health issues including severe depression, debilitating anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and suicidal behaviour. In addition to maintaining an active clinical practice, Dr. Rashid has established arguably the largest, quantitative-qualitative longitudinal database on key indicators in Canada to understand the complex, contextualized and culturally nuanced aspects of mental health of young adults.

Dr. Rashid has also worked with individuals experiencing with severe trauma, including 9/11 families, survivors of Asian Tsunami of 2004 and Syrian refugee families. Since, 2005, Dr. Rashid has actively worked with racialized and marginalized youth and families in priority areas of Toronto including Regent Park, Rexdale and Thorncliff Park, especially from lens of resilience and wellbeing to decrease cultural, personal and public stigma against mental health concerns and increase access to treatment. Dr. Rashid, has recently won Outstanding Practitioner Award from the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA; 2017) and Chancellor Award from the University of Toronto (2018).

Dr. Rashid’s work has been published in academic journals, included in text books of psychiatry and psychotherapy and has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Maclean’s magazine, Canadian Broadcasting Cooperation (CBC) and at TEDx. His book Positive Psychotherapy along with Martin Seligman, is considered the most comprehensive in the field and has been translated in several languages since its publication in late 2018.

Dr. Rashid has delivered more than 50 invited talks and keynotes and trained mental professionals internationally including at Harvard, Princeton, University of Paris, London, Melbourne, Maastricht and at all major universities in Canada, Dr. Rashid is the inaugural president of the Clinical Division of IPPA and also co-chairs a National Campus Mental Health Group in Canada which has play a key role in devising policy towards a systemic approach to mental health of young adults

CLNIICAL & SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE

SERVICES & PROJECTS

Therapeutic Services: Offered strengths-based individual and group therapy – Positive Psychotherapy (PPT) – and managed cases on need basis since 2011 to more than 1000 UTSC students experiencing depression, anxiety, psychosis, procrastination, trauma, relationship and adjustment concerns, acculturative stress and difficulties in familial relationships.

Crisis Co-ordination & Intervention: Handled more than 150 crises in past 9 years, in variety of clinical situations; incorporated a strengths-based approach integrating risks and resources, symptoms and strengths to facilitate a collaborative decision-making process by involving key student services including AccessAbility, Academic Advising & Career Services, Student Residence, Athletics & Recreation, Student Life office and whenever appropriate, students’ families, especially with students from diverse cultural backgrounds utilizing their communal strengths and resources.

Online Intake & Outcome System: Led development of new, completely paperless, online Intake and Outcome System (IOS) at the Health & Wellness Centre, UTSC, which incorporates symptoms, strengths and continuous outcome measures; the system has produced the most comprehensive cross-sectional and longitudinal clinical data (N= ~ 2700) in Canada

Positive Psychotherapy (PPT): Created field of Positive Psychotherapy (PPT), empirically validated it, with Martin Seligman, founder of Positive Psychology, completed and published three randomized clinical studies; Published manual and workbook (Rashid & Seligman, 2018; Oxford) . Currently being translated in nine languages; two published (Portuguese & German)

Flourish: Led from 2012 to present a multidisciplinary team in designing, implementing and evaluating a strengths-based program focused to enhance emotional, academic, social and career resilience of First Year students. More than 3700 UTSC students have participated in a program that includes comprehensive online clinical assessment and full-day workshops and has shown effectiveness in reducing distress and increasing well-being. The program has won a national innovation award and has been adapted and implemented at numerous universities.

Strengths-Based Resilience (SBR): Designed, delivered and disseminated on a large scale a group-based resilience intervention; wrote with a colleague a 280+ page train-the-trainer manual; conducted train-the-trainer and research on an approach to support students with mental health issues in secondary and post-secondary settings, in collaboration with Shoniker Clinic, Centenary Hospital and Toronto District School Board (TDSB). An SBR-based intervention was run at five schools, and at an outpatient clinic. Trained more than 130 educators mental health professionals, and more than 100 student service staff members from universities across Canada in this intervention (2015-19); overview at www.strengthsbasedresilience.com.

Systemic Approach to Post-Secondary Student Mental Health: Led a national group to design and launch Comprehensive Assessment and Planning Inventory to encapsulate a Systemic Approach towards Student Mental Health; the comprehensive interactive website www.cop-cacuss.com offers a systemic approach to campus mental health through assessment and planning guide

Minds Steeped in Hopelessness: Currently leading longitudinal study: What Predicts, Prevents & Heals a Suicidal Mind; based on quantitative-qualitative and longitudinal data of more than 2500 young adults who sought psychotherapy at a university-based, urban, and culturally diverse campus, this project explore what predicts and heals suicidal behaviour, along with protective roles of character strengths.

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE

Primary Supervisor for College of Psychologists Registration: Supervised clinical psychology faculty for registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario; as a result, positive psychotherapy has become part of psychotherapy course, 2012-2018

Supervisor of Graduate Students: Supervised six graduate students for their clinical practicums, exposing each student to a variety of ways strengths and positive psychology constructs can be incorporated into clinical practice, 2011 to date.

Co-leader, Peer Consultation: Co-led an online Peer Consultation Group on Positive Clinical Psychology (PCP) of regulated health professionals from Canada and USA, discussing clinical applications of positive psychology and resilience skills, 2018.

Clinical Supervisor: Supervised five doctoral students from School and Clinical Child Psychology Program, Department of Applied Psychology & Human Development, University of Toronto; these five students learnt ways to incorporate character strengths in psycho-educational assessments and in report writing, 2007-2010.

Supervisor for Senior Year Thesis: Supervised 5 UTSC students for their senior year thesis, independent studies and research projects on a range of mental health projects including acculturative stress, mental health of Muslim Females, Suicidal Behavior of Students Seeking Counselling, and Strengths-Based Resilience.

Supervisor for Capstone Projects: Supervised 9 Capstone projects of adult learners in Masters in Applied Positive Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, including health professionals, on a range of topics including character strengths in team, empirically based alternative health practices, resilience-based course for first-year college students and positive interventions for anxiety disorders; 2008-Present.

Predictors of Suicide Behaviour: Supervised Honors thesis which predicts suicidal behavior from clinical symptoms, diagnostic impressions and character strengths. (2017-to-date)

Randomized Clinical Trial: Positive Psychotherapy with Borderline Personality Disorder: Completed a three-year randomized study comparing group PPT with Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) with clients experiencing symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in collaboration with a clinical faculty. Published results through two articles in a top-tier scientific journal (2012-15)
